Tools and Materials in Masonry

TOOLS AND MATERIALS IN MASONRY

Masonry work dates back to ancient times, so are the masonry tools. At the construction site numerous construction tools can be seen, each having specific purpose. We use these tools in the construction process to complete the particular work. Masonry is structural construction of components part laid in and bound together by a material called mortar.

Common Masonry Tools

  •     Trowel

The basic masonry trowel is made up of stainless steel with a plastic/ wooden handle. The ends of trowel may be bull nosed or pointed. This is used to lift and spread mortar in joints during masonry construction. There are different kinds and sizes of trowels used in masonry work.

  • Corner Trowel

It is one of the common modifications of the basic trowel. It is used for shaping corners of the wall. They are two types of Corner Trowel.

  • Setting out square or Mason square

It is used to set out right angles at the corner of masonry wall. This is very important and basic tool used in masonry work. This tool has ā€œLā€ shape. It is made of flat steel having each arm about 0.5 m long.

  • Water Level

It is used to transfer and check level. It is a simple tool to measure the level at two different points. It is a tool that works on the principle that water always seeks its own level

  • Spades

They are used to mix mortar and also used to place cement, mortar, concrete in head pan. Spade is also used to dig the soil for foundation trenches etc. It consists of metal plate at the end of long wooden handle.

b. Targets TLE Competencies of the Project

In this project the targeted  TLE Competency " Explain the uses of tools and materials in masonry" that focuses on how to use the tools that make the job easier.

c.     The aim of the project

c.   The aim of this project entitled Masonry is to explain and provide a definite understanding about its type and importance. This project will provide an explanation and significant information that will help students, teachers, etc. to have an in depth understanding about the topic Masonry.

This project is also for the compliance in the subject Technology for Teaching and Learning.

d.       Beneficiaries and Project

d. BENEFITS OF MASONRY

  • Durability
  • Fire Resistance
  • Termite Resistance
  • Structural Integrity
  • Better Insulated (R Values)
  • Design Flexibility
  • Environmentally Safe
  • Reduced Sound Transmission
  • Savings on Initial and Life-Cycle Costs
  • Low Insurance Rates
  • Better Resale Value

Masonry has an Important Role in:

  • Supporting load
  • Subdividing the space
  • Providing thermal and acoustic insulation
  • Providing fire and weather protection
  • Privacy to the occupants

Masonry provides many benefits that may not be as immediately apparent. This program looks at masonry's ease of construction, its adaptability to site conditions, and its ability to meet an ambitious construction schedule. It addresses masonry's simultaneous performance as a structural system, high performance building envelope component, and attractive exterior cladding.

Using a masonry system for your next project will help you deliver a completed, structurally sound building in the shortest period. Masonry buildings go up fast and last! Another significant benefit of masonry is its performance under fire conditions as well as favorable insurance policy premiums for fire-safe masonry. When it comes to life safety, cost-benefits analysis, and mold resistance using a masonry system is the way to go. Think about, and hopefully make the decision to "go masonry" on your next project.

2. Pedagogical and Technological Requirements

(Discuss the mentoring methods used by members of the group, also include technological tools that they employed in development of the project)

The group for this project used Distance Mentoring as the member wherein the different settings. We also used this method as we think it is more convenient for us as our locations were too far from each other.

The group uses various tools and application to complete the project; it includes messenger which serves as the channel for the group members to communicate, word application for the compilation of the needed information given and search by the group members, YouTube application also help the group to look for tutorial and other significant information, and lastly the WordPress which one of the important tools used by the group, as it is the application being used to create the project blog.

3. Project Plan

Step 1: Identify and meet my co- members

            - We make sure to identify and keep our interests in mind when creating our project plan. By meeting with them we create a scope details, get everyone on the same page, and reduce the chances of costly miscommunication.

Step 2 : Set and prioritize goals

             - We prioritize and set our specific project goals. These should outline the project objectives or the metrics and benefits our group hope to achieve. Then, we need to address in our project plan so it's clearly communicated and easily understandable.

Step3 : Create the project schedule

             - We look at each deliverable and define the series of tasks that must be completed to accomplish each one. For each task, determine the amount of time that we consume, the resources necessary, and who will be responsible for each member in every part of our project.

We implement this project to everyone by Set clear goals and define the key variables in Tools and materials in masonry. We identify the goals and our strategy should be achieve.

Determining the roles and responsibilities, because ones we've determined the goals we are working toward and the variables that might get in our way, we set an expectations among our team and clearly communicate to implement our plan so there's no confusion.

We execute the plan and monitor progress, so we check in our group about their progress and listen to their feedback. Because one effective strategy for monitoring progress is to use in daily reports and check ins to provide updates, re establish due dates and milestones, and ensure the members of our group are aligned.

In our plan we provides an information about the Tools and materials in masonry, and how we implementing this to everyone and how do we come up to this project.

4. Project Development

When we develop our project, our group initiate, planned, execute, and determine the vision of our project, the document that we hope to accomplish, and take time to establish  clear and cohesive vision.

We build the project infrastructure that will enable us to achieve our goal. Everyone on our team will not only understand the vision of our project, but also we understand precisely what we need to do to each the finish line and deliver the projects more effectively.

In creating this project, we experienced a lot of difficulties the positive and negative aspects in our group based on our previous experiences. Then, the best way that we did is to brainstorm strategies in a group meeting and discuss to our members to ensure everyone stays in touch and participate in the work.

5. Reflections

Tools and Materials  contains lists and examples of useful tools and resources in making activities and maker spaces, including suggestions for consumables, hardware, machines, open source software, and other technologies. This category also includes guidance or tutorials on specific tools or skills.

Manual dexterity: You'll have to apply smooth, even layers of mortar and quickly set bricks. Creativity: You'll have to shape stones into attractive and functional structures. Reading skills: You must have an ability to read and comprehend instructions including safety policies and procedure manuals.

Students learn to use, care for and safely handle the tools, machinery, equipment and materials commonly used in the masonry trade. Activities involve laying brick, building walls and columns and planning and constructing a variety of structures.
